World Water Day grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environmental and Development in Rio de Janeiro. World Water Day in 2005 marked the beginning of the UN International Decade for Action on Water. This decade puts the spotlight on water-related programs, with hopes to increase the efforts for achieving international water-related goals and the United Nations Millennium Declaration.
